Loft conversions are one of the most effective ways to add space, light and value to your home. Whether you’re dreaming of a new bedroom, a home office, or a playroom, understanding what’s involved can help you feel confident and excited about the process.

At Crown, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners create beautiful, functional loft spaces, and we’re with you at every step. Here’s how a typical loft conversion unfolds.

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Feasibility

Before any work begins, we’ll:

  • Talk through your ideas and how you want to use your new space.
  • Survey your existing loft to check head height, roof structure and feasibility.
  • Offer advice on the best type of conversion for your home (e.g., dormer, Velux, hip-to-gable or mansard).

This step helps establish what’s possible and starts shaping your ideal design.

Step 2: Design & Approvals

Once the concept is set:

  • Detailed plans are drawn up.
  • The relevant permissions are made to the local authority, which takes roughly 8–10 weeks to be approved.
  • Building regulations approval is organised; this is essential for safety and compliance.

We handle all of this for you so you can relax while the paperwork and approvals are taken care of.

Step 3: Preparing the Site

Before construction on the loft begins:

  • Scaffolding is carefully erected around your property.
  • Materials are delivered, and everything is made ready for the build.

This early preparation keeps the project smooth and minimises disruption.

Step 4: Structural Work

This is where the real transformation starts:

  • New floor joists are installed above your existing ceiling.
  • Dormers or other extensions are built if they form part of your design.

At this stage, your loft space begins to take shape.

Step 5: First Fix Electrics & Plumbing

With the structure ready:

  • Electrical cables and plumbing pipework are installed.
  • These are hidden later behind walls and ceilings once plastering is complete.

This phase prepares the space for comfortable living.

Step 6: Floor & Staircase Installation

Now your loft conversion becomes truly liveable:

  • New floorboards are put down to create a stable surface.
  • The staircase is installed, connecting your new room with the rest of the house.

Good access makes all the difference to how the space feels.

Step 7: Insulation & Plasterboard

Keeping your loft warm and cosy is important:

  • Insulation is fitted to reduce heat loss.
  • Walls and ceilings are lined with plasterboard ready for the finishing touches.

This step also improves energy efficiency.

Step 8: Second Fix & Finishing

At this point:

  • Electrical fixtures, sockets and lights are connected.
  • Plumbing fixtures like sinks or toilets (if you’ve chosen a bathroom) are fitted.

We make sure everything is complete and working before moving on.

Step 9: Final Clean & Handover

Almost there! We:

  • Complete last-minute touches.
  • Clean the loft so it’s ready for decorating and use.
  • Walk you through the finished space.

Step 10: Scaffolding Removal

In the final week:

  • Scaffolding is taken down.
  • You can enjoy your new loft space and add your own personal touches.

Most of our loft conversions take about 8–10 weeks on site, depending on size and specification.

A loft conversion is a straightforward process when you have the right team guiding you. From initial consultation right through to handover, professional planning and execution ensure your project is stress-free and delivered to a high standard.
